Aarikka large wooden brooch

designed for other Finnish Designers

Here is a fabulous example of the work of Kaija Aarikka, a Finnish designer, originally of textiles, who started making wooden bead jewellery in 1954. The wood is Finnish birch that, thanks to Aarikka´s own dyeing method, acquires a beautiful, translucent sheen. The company is still in production but of course the styles have changed and this impressive brooch has long since disappeared from the catalogue.
