Hjaltasteyn mythological birds earrings
designed for other UK designers
These extraordinary earrings (postbacks for pierced ears) come from Whiteness in the Shetland Isles, where - as the tourist office says - Scotland meets Scandinavia. Indeed, Shetland remained under Scandinavian rule far longer than anywhere else in Britain, until 1469, when the Danish king pawned it to Scotland as part of the dowry for his daughter.
Hjaltasteyn is the trading name for a jewellery company which was established in 1968, and was bought out and moved to a new location in 1990. So we know that these earrings were made before then.
The motif on each of these very large earrings is two interlaced mythological birds, forever inter-connected. The motif may be Celtic or Viking in origin, as both cultures used this style of depicting animals.
