Mythological Anglian Beast 'Urnes' Brooch

designed for other UK designers

Here is a stunning brooch made by Shetland Silver. It depicts the so-called 'Anglian' Beast, and is a reproduction of a Nordic design from the North of England during the Viking occupation at the end of the first millenium. This artistic style was also called zoomorphic and 'Urnes' after the gate of the stave church in Urnes in Norway, which is covered in carvings of this nature.  These fantastic beasts can also be seen on runic stones in Sweden, and also in Celtic artwork.

It is not surprising that artists on the most northerly island of Great Britain should be inspired to reproduce Viking artworks, as the island is close to Scandinavia, both in distance and culture. Indeed, Shetland was under Scandinavian rule until 1469.
